Cable car & 4x4
Two separate rides sit between the road head and the summit craters, and they are the reason fares on this site run from $44 to $193. The funivia lifts you from Rifugio Sapienza at roughly 1,900 m to about 2,500 m. Above it, converted four-wheel-drive buses carry on to roughly 2,900 m. Both are sold as tickets in their own right, and whether a tour includes them changes its price more than anything else on the listing.

Quick answer
The short answer. If you want one number that covers everything, book $193 — the transfer, the round-trip cable car and 4x4 bus tickets and a guided trek, six hours, nothing left to pay on the mountain. If you want the same idea at the other end of the price list, $44 is four hours to 3,000 m with the cable car and jeep included and the lowest fare on this site. And if a listing looks unusually cheap for a summit day, check whether the lifts are inside it before you compare.
The basics
The funivia is a cable car from the car park at Rifugio Sapienza. It does the first part of the climb, roughly 600 m of height, and puts you out on open ash well above the last of the vegetation. From there the mountain is bare in every direction, and the walking distances become long.
The 4x4 buses take over from the top station. These are not jeeps in the weekend sense: they are heavy four-wheel-drive buses built for a track of loose volcanic rubble, and they run to roughly 2,900 m. That is where driving stops on this mountain. Everything above it is walked.
Both are sold separately from the tours. This is the fact that catches people out. A guide is one business, the lifts are another, and a tour listing can include neither, one or both. $63 spells it out in capital letters in its own description: the cable car and 4x4 ticket is paid at the meeting point, in cash, to speed up check-in.
Which is why the fares look strange until you read that line. $44 and $193 both include lift travel and sit at opposite ends of this site’s price list; the difference between them is the transfer, the length and the guiding, not the mountain. Meanwhile a mid-priced listing with the lifts excluded can cost more in total than either.

Every trip, current fare
The column that matters on this page is "What is included": read it for the words cable car and 4x4 before you read the number. Cost per hour divides the fare by the listed length.

The three cases
Every tour on this site falls into one of these three. Knowing which one you are looking at is the whole skill of reading these fares.
| Case | What it means | How to spot it | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Includedone number | The tickets are inside the fare and nothing is collected on the day | The listing names cable car and 4x4 in what is included | $193 and $44 |
| Paid on the daycash at the meeting point | The tour price is lower and the lift ticket is handed over separately | The listing says the ticket is paid at the meeting point | $63 |
| Not includedbuy it yourself | You ride the lift, but the ticket is your own arrangement | The listing states that the ticket is not included | $63 |
| Not neededthe walk starts lower | The route never uses the lifts, so there is nothing extra to pay | The listing names a height below 2,500 m, or walks from the road head | $79 and $86 |
The verdict
Four sensible answers, depending on what you want the day to be.
If you want everything settled at booking, take $193. Round-trip cable car and 4x4 bus tickets, the transfer from the city and a moderate guided trek, six hours. It is the highest fare on this site and it is the only one that leaves nothing to pay on the mountain.
If you want the same inclusion for less, take $44. Four hours, the newest flows, craters, a lava tunnel and the view down to the coast, with the cable car and jeep 4x4 in the fare. It is the lowest fare here, and it starts from a meeting point up the mountain rather than from a hotel.
If you would rather pay the lifts separately, take $63. Its listing is explicit that the ticket is handed over in cash at the meeting point, which keeps the booking price down and means you should bring the money. It holds 4,639 reviews at 4.6.
If you want to skip the lifts entirely, take $86. Silvestri craters, lava fields, Valle del Bove, a hidden lava cave and a sandy descent, seven hours, rated 4.9 across 1,812 reviews. It is the best-rated day on this site and it never needs a ticket window.
Where the money stops working: above the 4x4 track no vehicle helps you, so paying more cannot buy more height. From there it is the guide, the weather and your own legs, which is exactly how the summit listings describe it.
Book direct
Everything included at the top of the range, everything included at the bottom, the ticket paid in cash on the day, the certified-guide route above the track, and two days that never touch the lifts at all.

The variables
The lifts are a means, not an attraction. These four decide whether you want them.
Your target height
Everything up to the Silvestri craters is a walk from the car park. Everything above 2,500 m starts with the funivia.
Your budget shape
$193 settles it at booking; $63 splits it between the booking and cash at the meeting point.
Your legs
The cable car replaces a long, steep walk on ash. On $75 it and the 4x4 carry you to 2,800 m before the walking starts.
The day itself
Lifts on an exposed mountain are weather-dependent, and guides plan around that. It is another reason free cancellation is worth having.

The ground
From the cabin the change is obvious within a minute. The car park and the Silvestri craters drop away, the last shrubs give out, and the slope becomes an unbroken field of ash and clinker in a dozen shades of grey and rust. That transition, more than the height itself, is what the cable car buys you.
The 4x4 track is a road only by courtesy. Graded volcanic rubble, switching back and forth across the slope, dusty in summer and closed by snow for part of the winter. The buses are built for it and the drivers do it all day; it is slow, and it is a ride people remember.
Where it puts you. At roughly 2,900 m you are on a broad shoulder with the summit cone ahead and, on a clear day, the whole eastern flank below. $75 names 2,800 m as the point where the vehicles stop and the walking begins, and $138 uses the same track from the Taormina side.
What it does not buy. Height above the track. Once the buses stop, the mountain is walked with a volcanology guide, and how far a group goes is decided on the day. The lifts save you a thousand metres of climbing; they do not save you the last few hundred.
Mistakes
Five of the six are made on the booking page, and one at the ticket window.
It is the single most expensive assumption on this mountain. $63 and $193 are not comparable numbers.
Where the ticket is paid at the meeting point, the listing says cash. Bring it rather than discover it.
$86 and $79 work entirely below the cable car. The ticket would be money for nothing.
Driving stops at roughly 2,900 m. The summit craters are above it, on foot.
They are weather-dependent on an exposed mountain, and guides rearrange days around that.
A ticket window at 1,900 m in August is not where you want to be making decisions. Free cancellation means booking early costs nothing but the click.
Checklist
All five are printed on the listing page, and all five move the real cost.
If they are there, the ticket is in the fare. If they are not, plan for it separately.
The second ticket, and the one that takes you from 2,500 m to about 2,900 m.
$63 states it outright. That is a better listing, not a worse one — it tells you before you arrive.
Below 2,500 m the lifts are irrelevant. Above 3,000 m they are only the start of the day.
Shown across the listings gathered here, and useful on a mountain where the wind decides whether the cabins run.
Once the 4x4 track ends, the rest of the mountain is walked with a guide.

It runs from Rifugio Sapienza at roughly 1,900 m to about 2,500 m. Above that the 4x4 buses continue to roughly 2,900 m.
Sometimes. $193 and $44 include lift travel; $63 states the ticket is not included and $63 collects it in cash at the meeting point.
They are sold as tickets in their own right, which is why some listings quote them separately. $193 is the version that bundles the round trip with a transfer and a guide.
Not for the Silvestri craters at the road head, which are a short walk from the car park. You need it for anything above about 2,500 m.
To roughly 2,900 m, the end of the track. The summit craters above that are reached on foot with a volcanology guide.
Guides rearrange the day around the mountain and the weather. Free cancellation, shown across these listings, is the reason it rarely costs you anything.
