Lava caves

The lava caves of Etna: what a tunnel in the rock actually is, and who takes you in

A lava cave is not a hole worn out by water. It is the empty inside of an old flow: the surface of the lava cooled into a crust, the hot rock kept running underneath, and when it drained away it left a tunnel. Mount Etna is full of them, you go in with a helmet and a lamp, and on this site exactly three of the twenty-two listings put a cave visit in their title. This page says which three, what the stop is like, and why the other listings on the mountain leave it out.

Quick answer

The short answer. If you want a lava cave with the best evening around it, book $68: five hours with a trek, a cave and a tasting, rated 4.8 across 1,762 reviews. If you would rather arrive by jeep and have the most reviewed version, book $69, which names the lava flow caves in its own title. And if you are staying on the Taormina side, $89 puts hiking, a cave visit and a tasting into seven hours.

How they form

A tunnel is what is left when the lava leaves

The picture most people arrive with is a cavern carved by water over thousands of years. A lava cave on Etna is the opposite kind of object, and it is much younger. When a flow moves downhill, its top surface meets the air and hardens into a crust while the rock underneath stays molten and keeps running. If the supply stops, the still-liquid lava drains out from under that roof and leaves a hollow tube behind it. Walking through one is walking inside the shape a flow made of itself.

That is why the walls look the way they do. They are smooth in places where the rock flowed past, ribbed in others where it slowed, and the roof often carries the marks of the last level the lava reached, like a tide line. There is no decoration in a lava cave, no formations built up drop by drop over centuries. What there is instead is the plain record of a few hours of movement, preserved because the roof held.

Practically, a visit is short and it is dark. You go in with a helmet, because the ceiling is rock and it is not a uniform height, and with a lamp, because there is no other source of light once you are past the entrance. The floor is uneven old rock. None of the listings on this site sells a cave as an expedition: on $68 and $69 it is one stop inside a five-hour evening, and on $89 it is one item in a seven-hour day.

One honest note about the names. The listings on this site do not say which tunnel they use, and operators work with more than one depending on the day and on conditions. We are not going to name a cave for them or describe a specific tunnel we cannot see on the booking page. If the identity of the cave matters to you, that is a question for the operator before you pay.

Every trip, current fare

The six listings on this page, side by side

Three of these name a cave visit in their title. The other three are here because they are the walking days on the same part of the mountain, and people comparing caves usually end up comparing them too. The cost-per-hour column makes a five-hour evening and a seven-hour day comparable.

Choosing between them

Three listings with a cave, and three without

The evening with the fullest itinerary is $68. Five hours with a volcano trek, a cave and a tasting, rated 4.8 across 1,762 reviews. If your ideal day has some walking, a lava cave and a stop on the lower slopes in it, this listing was written for you.

The one with the most reviews is $69. Five hours, rated 4.7 across 2,666 reviews, and the only listing on this site that puts the lava flow caves in the title as the destination rather than as an extra. You are carried up the ash track by 4x4 rather than walking to it.

From Taormina, the answer is $89. Seven hours with hiking, a cave visit and a tasting, rated 4.7 across 753 reviews. It is a longer day because Taormina is further round the mountain, and the extra two hours are mostly road.

The three without a cave are here for contrast. $77 is a seven-hour hiking day with equipment provided, rated 4.7 across 819 reviews. $86 is seven hours away from the busiest paths, rated 4.9 across 1,812 reviews — the highest score of the walking listings. $138 is a seven-hour day at the upper craters from Taormina, rated 4.4 across 672 reviews. If the high ground matters more to you than a tunnel, these are the days to read.

Five things to settle before the cave stop

A lava cave is a short stop and an easy one, but it is easier still if these five lines are settled at booking. The right-hand column is what tends to happen when they are not.

What to expect

Seven things people say about the caves

All of it comes from what the listings themselves sell, or from what a lava tunnel is by its nature.

  • It is properly dark

Past the entrance there is no light but the one you carry. That is the part people describe first afterwards.

  • The walls are smooth in places

Where the rock flowed fastest it polished its own channel. It is the clearest evidence you will get of what a lava cave used to be.

  • There are no formations

Nothing here was built up drop by drop. A lava tunnel is a few hours of movement frozen in place, which is a different pleasure from a limestone cavern.

  • The helmet is not a formality

The roof changes height. Everybody taps it at least once, and everybody is glad of the helmet when they do.

  • The stop is short

On all three listings that include one, the cave is a stop inside a longer day rather than the day itself.

  • It is cooler inside than out

Rock keeps its own temperature. In summer that is a relief, and in the evening it is a reason for the extra layer.

  • Free cancellation on the tours

It applies to every tour on this site, which helps when the day you want depends on the weather you cannot book in advance.

When to go

Morning, evening, or a whole day from Taormina

The cave itself does not care what hour it is. What changes is the mountain you cross to reach it, and how long the day around it runs.

Morning

Clear air on the way up

The morning departures on this site do not name a cave, so a morning is the choice for altitude and visibility rather than for tunnels.

Late afternoon

The two evening listings

$68 and $69 both work this window: a trek or a jeep run, a lava cave and the light going afterwards.

Full day

Seven hours from Taormina

$89 with hiking, a cave visit and a tasting, rated 4.7 across 753 reviews. Longer because the road is longer.

High ground instead

If the tunnels are not the point

$86 at seven hours, rated 4.9 across 1,812 reviews, and $138 at the upper craters from Taormina.

The verdict

What to book if the caves were your starting point

For the fullest evening, book $68. Five hours with a volcano trek, a cave and a tasting from Catania, rated 4.8 across 1,762 reviews. Three different things in one evening, and a lava cave is one of them.

For the most reviewed version, book $69. Five hours, a sunset jeep run on Mount Etna and the lava flow caves, rated 4.7 across 2,666 reviews — the only listing here that puts the tunnels in the title as the destination.

From Taormina, book $89. Seven hours with hiking, a cave visit and a tasting, rated 4.7 across 753 reviews.

If you would rather walk than go underground, book $86. Seven hours away from the busiest paths, rated 4.9 across 1,812 reviews — the highest score of the walking days on this page.

And for the high ground from the Taormina side, book $138. A seven-hour day at the upper craters, rated 4.4 across 672 reviews, and the largest fare on this page.

Common questions

Common questions about the caves on Etna

What is a lava cave, exactly?

The empty inside of an old flow. The surface cooled into a crust, the molten rock underneath drained away, and the tunnel it left is what you walk into with a helmet and a lamp.

Which tours include one?

Three of the twenty-two listings on this site name a cave in the title: $68, $69 and $89. The others are about altitude, the gorges, Taormina or the tastings.

Which cave do they visit?

The listings do not say, and operators use more than one depending on conditions. We would rather tell you that than name a tunnel we cannot see on the booking page. Ask the operator if it matters to you.

Is it hard going?

It is a short stop on uneven old rock, not a climb. Closed shoes with a proper sole and a willingness to duck are the whole requirement.

Is it suitable if I dislike enclosed spaces?

A lava cave is a tunnel with one way in and out, and the roof height varies. That is a real question to ask the operator at booking rather than at the entrance.
