There are two different mountains here and only one of them suits a family. The lower one begins where the road ends: the Silvestri Craters sit beside the car park at Rifugio Sapienza, you can walk around them without a lift ticket or a jeep, and there are lava caves, old flows and enormous views within an easy morning of Catania. The upper one starts above the cable car, is walked with a certified volcano guide, and is a serious day out for adults. This page sorts the twenty-two listings on this site into those two mountains and says plainly which is which, so nobody books seven hours of ash at altitude for a seven-year-old.

Quick answer
The short answer. Stay on the lower mountain and keep the day under six hours. $79 is the one this site would book first for a family: five and a half hours, ancient lava flows, a lava cave and an extinct crater at 1,800 m, reached by 4x4 rather than on foot, behind 847 reviews at 4.9. $44 is the shortest day here at four hours. $69 adds tastings and a cave with a helmet and a flashlight. Skip the guided summit treks, however fit your teenager is, unless the whole family walks. Bring a warm layer for anybody. Free cancellation applies on every tour here.
Two mountains
The southern approach is easy to picture. A road climbs from Nicolosi through the old flows and stops at Rifugio Sapienza, at around 1,900 m. Right there, within a few minutes of the car park, are the Silvestri Craters: broad, dark cones you can walk onto and around on gravel paths. That is the part of the mountain that works with small children. Nothing has to be climbed, nothing has to be booked, the ground is flat enough for short legs, and you are standing on a volcano.
Above the refuge, the cable car carries towards 2,500 m and the four-wheel-drive buses continue on the track towards 2,900 m. Above that, the craters are reached on foot with a certified volcano guide. Each of those stages raises the price, and each raises the demand on the people walking. By the top stage you are on loose ash, at altitude, in weather that is not the weather in Catania.
So the family question is not really which trip is best. It is which of those two mountains your booking is aimed at. The listings make that obvious once you know what to look for: a title with the word summit in it is the upper mountain, and a listing that names a lava cave, the Silvestri Craters, a tasting or a 4x4 to a lower crater is the other one.
One more thing to plan around. The mountain is higher and more open than anywhere else the family will stand that week, and the air moves across it. Children who were warm in Catania will not be warm at the craters, and this is true in the summer months as well as the cold ones. The wind is the part people are unprepared for, rather than the temperature: it is steady, it comes across open ground with nothing to break it, and it makes standing still on a crater rim much less comfortable than walking. A packed jacket solves the entire problem and weighs nothing in the car.

What works
The single best thing on the lower mountain for a child is a lava cave. These are not caverns in rock; they are tunnels the lava left behind when the outside of a flow cooled and the inside kept running. You walk into a space that was moving lava, and that is a much easier idea to hold at eight years old than an altitude reading. $79, $68, $89 and $109 all name one. $69 names the helmet and flashlight that come with it, which is exactly the detail that turns a walk into an expedition in a child’s account of it afterwards.
The second thing is the ground itself. The lower craters are black gravel and coarse ash, and it behaves like nothing at home: it slides a little under each step, it is warm-coloured in the light, and it takes footprints perfectly. $86 names the Silvestri Craters on its own page and ends with a sandy descent, which is a scree run and the single most fun thing on the mountain for anybody under about fifteen. It is seven hours in a small group, so it is a teenager booking rather than a toddler one, but it is worth knowing about.
Third, the vehicle. Some of the day is going to be a drive whatever you book, and a listing that does the climbing with wheels instead of legs is a different day for a family. $79 is built that way: 4x4 vehicles, the wild side of the mountain, an extinct crater at 1,800 m, a lava cave, five and a half hours. It carries 847 reviews at 4.9, and it is our pick here for exactly that reason.
Fourth, the escape valve. A day that has a second half somewhere softer rescues itself if the mountain half goes badly. $97 puts the Alcantara Gorges after the craters: basalt walls over cold running water, about an hour away, and lunch. $109 puts an afternoon in Taormina after the morning on the volcano, lunch included. Both are long days, and both end somewhere a tired child is happy to be.
What to skip
The guided summit treks. $63, $63, $75, $67 and $63 are all built to go high with a certified volcano guide, and the upper mountain is walked on loose ash in open weather. They are excellent days for adults who want them, and the listings are honest about the demand: $63 offers a lighter version and a more demanding one on the same page. With small children, take the lower mountain instead; with teenagers who walk willingly, read the listing conditions before you decide, because each operator sets its own.
The twelve-hour day out of Palermo. $132 visits the volcano and Taormina in one run, and the drive across Sicily is most of it. At 1,061 reviews it is rated 4.1, the lowest here, and the length of the day in a vehicle is the reason people give. If you are based on the eastern side, $109 does the same two places in nine to ten hours with lunch included and carries 4.9.
The quad run, for anyone too young to ride. $115 is two hours off-road from Nicolosi with a windbreaker and a helmet included, and it is a genuinely good two hours. It is also built around driving. Age and licence conditions are set by the operator on its own page, so read them before you book for a family rather than after.
What to take instead is consistent: a morning start, a lava cave, wheels doing the climbing, and six hours or fewer. $79 first, $44 if you want it shorter still, $68 or $69 if you want pickup and a tasting inside the fare.

Who it fits

$79 is five and a half hours by 4x4 to ancient lava flows, a lava cave and an extinct crater at 1,800 m, on 847 reviews at 4.9. It is the shortest route to a real volcano day without a long walk.
$44 is four hours from Nicolosi, the shortest booking on this site, and its title names the cable car and the jeep so the climbing is done for you.
$68 and $69 both include pickup and drop-off, run six hours, travel in small groups and add a tasting. The first lets you choose a morning or a sunset departure at the same fare.
$86 is seven hours with a naturalistic guide past the Silvestri Craters, the lava fields and Valle del Bove, with equipment included and a sandy descent at the end. 1,812 reviews at 4.9.
$97 follows the craters with the Alcantara Gorges and lunch across eight hours, and $109 follows them with an afternoon in Taormina.
$68 is five hours with a lava cave, the recent craters and a tasting, finishing in the last light. $69 is the morning version, with a helmet and a flashlight named in its listing.
The wind is the part families are least ready for. Here is what to put in the bag before you drive up.

Common questions
The lower one. The Silvestri Craters sit beside the road at about 1,900 m, on flat gravel, with no cable car or jeep needed to reach them. Listings that name a lava cave or a lower crater — $79, $69 — are built around that level.
Above 3,000 m the route is walked with a certified volcano guide on loose ash in open weather, and each operator sets its own conditions on its own page. Read those before booking a summit trek for anyone young, and take the lower mountain if you are unsure.
Colder and much windier than Catania, in any month, because the ground is open and there is nothing to break the air. No listing here publishes temperatures, so the sensible plan is a warm layer and a windproof top in the bag whatever the forecast in town says.
$44 at four hours, leaving from Nicolosi, with the cable car and the jeep named in its own title. $79 is five and a half hours and rated 4.9.
Book a day with a second place in it. $97 adds the Alcantara Gorges and lunch, and $109 adds an afternoon in Taormina. Free cancellation applies on every tour here if the plan changes entirely.
